The Department of Home Affairs in Port Elizabeth says parts of its computer systems are down, due to upgrades taking place at their Pretoria head office.
District Manager, Sonto Lusu, says this is only affecting new applications for the smart ID cards.
She says as they are working offline, the system is very slow.
"If you come to apply for a smart id card and you are going to pay the necessary R140, that is you don't fall within the new issue as well as the 60 years and above. I t's still able to take your application, however because we are working on offline mode the system is very slow. If you want to come collect your smart id you can still come but it takes 45 minutes per individual." say Lusu
Lusu added that all modernised offices countrywide taking in smart ID applications have been affected by the system upgrade.
"All offices nationwide that are modernised, all the offices taking in smart id cards applications they are affected because it's an upgrade relating to the new smart id card."
