Six suspects from Mandela township in Mthatha will be appearing in the Mthatha Magistrate's Court on Wednesday on charges of the illegal possession of firearms and ammunition.
Police Lieutenant Colonel Mzukisi Fatyela sais the suspects aged between 25 and 35 were arrested on Monday afternoon on the R61 near Baziya on the way from Mthatha to Engcobo.
Fatyela says police reacted on a tip off from the public about a planned robbery and swooped on the men who were travelling in a VW Polo.
Police searched the suspects and found unlicensed firearms and ammunition in their possession.
The Polo, three firearms and 25 rounds of ammunition were confiscated by the police.
Fatyela says the suspects were also linked to the robbery of a businesses in Mthatha last Friday.
