Suspects in court for armed robbery in PE on Christmas eve

Two armed robbery suspects were due to appear in the Port Elizabeth magistrate’s court on Monday after they were arrested in connection with an armed robbery of a business on Christmas eve.

Police spokesperson Colonel Priscilla Naidu said that the two suspects, aged 25 and 57, were facing charges of business robbery and possession of a suspected stolen vehicle.

“It is alleged that on Thursday, 24 December 2015, at about 10am, four unknown people (three men and a woman) entered a business premises in Uitenhage Road North End, Port Elizabeth, and held up the complainant and employees.

“Two firearms were produced and cash and tools were taken. The suspects fled in a white Toyota Corolla. A short while later, members from the Tactical Response Team(TRT) spotted the vehicle in New Brighton. The vehicle was stopped and the driver, 25, and a passenger, 57, were arrested.”

Naidu said the stolen tools and some of the cash was recovered and it was further established that the vehicle was stolen in Mamelodi in 2013.

The suspects were detained at Mount Road cells while the other suspects were still being sought.

Naidu added: “Police are urging businesses not to keep large amounts of money in their safes and to be wary of groups of people crowding their shops.”
