Suspects flee vehicles on N2 stacked with abalone

Abalone seized from two vehicles near Thornhill

SAPS

Eastern Cape police have recovered abalone valued at more than R600 000 from two vehicles on the N2 near Thornhill.

Spokesperson, Sergeant Majola Nkohli says a resident alerted the police about people who were busy loading plastic bags into two vehicles at the beach in Pellsrus, Jeffreys Bay on Tuesday.

He says the K9 unit dispatched a vehicle to monitor the N2 between Jeffreys Bay and Thornhill.

Nkohli says the two vehicles were later spotted and pulled off the road.

The occupants in both vehicles fled into nearby bushes and a search was conducted, but the three managed to escape.

Police opened a case of contravening the Marine Living Resources Act and the search for the suspects continues.
