Uitenhage police are searching for five suspects, after they held staff at gunpoint and tried to blow up an ATM at a petrol station in Kuyler street on Saturday.
Spokesperson, WO Basil Seekoei says they locked the petrol attendants and staff in an office in the store, and a loud sound was heard shortly afterwards.
He says staff later saw that an attempt was made to blow up the automated teller machine inside the store.
Seekoei says the suspects fled in a white Hyundai sedan.
No shots were fired, and no one was injured.
Seekoei says it is not known if money was taken from the ATM.
At this stage, police are investigating charges of pointing a firearm and malicious damage to property.
