Western Cape detectives probing a spate of murders in the Cape Town metropole arrested four suspects in the Eastern Cape.
The arrests on Sunday followed ongoing investigations into at least 12 murders in Phillipi East and Gugulethu in June and July this year.
Western Cape police spokesperson, Brigadier Novela Potelwa, said the suspects, aged between 23 and 26, were arrested on Sunday on the R-61 between Cofimvaba and Komani.
They will be transported to the Western Cape where they are due to appear in court soon.
Potelwa said the four were linked to shootings where multiple fatalities occurred. In one incident, five people were gunned down at Block 4 in Phillip East at the end of June.
She said as the investigations unfold, the possibility that the suspects could be linked to other multiple murder cases cannot be ruled out.
Western Cape Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant-General Yolisa Matakata welcomed the arrests.
“While the arrests signal a significant milestone in the investigation, I am confident the team’s unrelenting efforts are yet to deliver more in our quest to eradicate serious violent crimes,” Matakata said.
