Suspects arrested for illegal hunting at Port Alfred

Three men aged 26, 30 and 57 have been arrested by Warrent Officer Tertius Neethling of the Port Alfred K9 unit on charges of illegal hunting and possession of endangered wild animals.

They will face 8 additional counts when they appear in court this week.

Captain Mali Govender says the men were arrested when Neethling pulled a vehicle over that was speeding into Port Alfred from Kenton on the R72 on Saturday.

On searching the vehicle,  members found the carcasses of  2 Bushbuck, 1 grey duiker and 1 porcupine - along  with a live dog in the boot.

A dead spring hare and a live grey duiker were found in a bag in the boot.

A variety of blood stained hunting equipment and a spotlight with a large battery were also seized.

The total value of the animals has been put at R18 000.

Captain Govender says the driver was also issued with 2 warnings by an Inspector from the local SPCA for transporting a live dog in the boot and for allowing the duiker to suffer.

The duiker had to be euthanized by the SPCA.
