Security was tight at the Grahamstown magistrate's court on Monday for the appearance of three men, who police believed are linked to a PE gang arrested last week on a range of serious charges.
Police believe that the men were planning to help a man, who was admitted to a Grahamstown hospital last week with gunshots wounds, escape from the institution.
Police spokesperson, captain Mali Govender, says the wounded man was released from hospital into the custody of Port Elizabeth police, who are investigating several serious cases including, armed robbery, hijacking and murder in the Eastern Cape.
Five other suspects were also arrested last week by police in Motherwell, Port Elizabeth, as part of the ongoing probe.
Govender says the three men who appeared in court in Grahamstown , have been remanded in custody pending a possible bail application.
