A suspect who tried to break into a house in an upmarket estate in Gqeberha has been shot in the leg.
The incident happened shortly after midnight on Wednesday at an estate situated in Colleen Glen, on the outskirts of the city.
Police Spokesperson Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg says the 60-year-old complainant woke up when he heard a noise coming from outside his window on the balcony.
She says he went to investigate and spotted a suspect dressed in a blue overall, already busy lifting up his sliding door.
Captain Janse van Rensburg says the man warned the suspect that he would call the police and fired a warning shot.
She says when the suspect came closer, he fired another shot.
The 31-year-old man jumped off the balcony and ran away.
Police say by then the home-owner had activated his panic button and a private security company responded.
Janse van Rensburg says they noticed a man in a blue overall who was limping and noticed that he had been shot.
He was arrested and will appear in court on Friday.
Police will investigate the suspect's links to other house breakings in the area.
