A 21-year-old man has been arrested after being found in possession of stolen copper cables worth more than R350 000 in Komani in the Eastern Cape.
Hawks Spokesperson, Captain Yolisa Mgolodela, says members were conducting routine checks when they came across a bakkie loaded with copper cable on Monday morning.
She says when the driver of the bakkie spotted the police vehicle, he sped off but lost control before crashing into another vehicle and fleeing on foot.
Mgolodela says the Hawks were summoned when the suspect returned to the crime scene moments later.
According to the Hawks, the stolen cables are linked to Sentech, a company responsible for erecting tower poles for network signals around the Cala area.
The theft caused damage of over R2 million to their infrastructure.
The suspect is expected to appear in the Cala Magistrates Court soon.
