Suspect kills accomplice by accident while fleeing from botched robbery in PE

Police in Port Elizabeth are investigating a botched robbery in Newton Park which led to the death of one of the suspects.

Spokesperson Colonel Priscilla Naidu says the victim, who is also a suspect in the crime, was killed by his accomplice while they were trying to flee.

She says it is alleged that a 23-year-old woman was walking from a nearby ATM in 7th avenue just before 7 pm when she noticed two men whom she saw earlier when she drew money.

Colonel Naidu says one suspect produced a firearm while the other one grabbed her cell phone.

She says the victim resisted and fought with the suspects.

A group of employees from a nearby private ambulance service rushed to her aid.

Colonel Naidu says the suspects ran away and jumped into a private taxi who was waiting for someone else.

The suspect with the firearm got into the back seat of the Chevy Spark while his accomplice tried to get into the passenger seat.

She says the driver drove off with the suspect still hanging halfway into the vehicle.

It is further alleged that two shots were fired inside the vehicle hitting the suspect trying to get into the front.

Colonel Naidu says he sustained a bullet wound on his shoulder and fell out of the car.

As the taxi driver was proceeding to the police station to report the incident, the suspect at the back got off and ran away.

Police are investigating a case of attempted robbery, malicious damage to property (the taxi driver’s window was shattered) and murder.

At this stage, the identity of the deceased is unknown.
