Two police constables have been shot and wounded and a suspect killed during a shootout at Ngxaxha Locality near Mount Fletcher in the Eastern Cape on Thursday.
Lieutenant, Khaya Thonjeni said the two police members were part of the Mount Fletcher Task Team and Crime Intelligence Gathering, and were following up on information about an unlicensed firearm in the area.
Thonjeni said when they arrived at the homestead, the suspect opened fire on them.
Constable Qwanti and Constable Lefora were both shot in the lower body. One suspect was shot and killed during the shoot out.
Thonjeni said the two officers were rushed to hospital where they're in a stable condition, "the IPID has informed of this incident and cases of murder and attempted murder were opened and are currently under investigation."
The Eastern Cape Provincial Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Liziwe Nsthinga condemned the attack on the police officers and said the incident will not deter police in their fight against crime.
