A robbery suspect was killed and a policeman wounded in a shootout outside a tavern in Zwide on Sunday.
Police spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu, said members were on their way to a complaint when they were stopped by community members in Kubo Street, in Zwide informing them of a robbery in progress at the local tavern.
She said when police arrived on the scene, the suspects opened fire as they tried to get into a hijacked vehicle.
“The members returned fire and the suspects retreated and ran away. One suspect, about 25 years old succumbed to gunshot wounds at the scene,” Naidu said.
A 31-year old policeman sustained gunshot wounds to his leg and fingers and taken to hospital and is in a stable condition.
Police recovered a 9mm pistol from the scene as well as a cell phone and the stolen alcohol.
Naidu said cases of business robbery, vehicle hijacking, and attempted murder were opened while an inquest docket was also opened in relation to the death of the suspect.
