A Gqeberha policeman had a lucky escape when a gunman opened fire on him outside his home in Zwide on Tuesday night.
Colonel Priscilla Naidu said the off-duty Sergeant was confronted at his home by two men, who inquired about another person.
She says one of the men forced open the gate to the yard and fired a shot at the policeman, who returned fire, fatally wounding one of the men.
The other suspect jumped into a car and fled.
The motive for the attack on the policeman is unknown, while the identity of the deceased is also not yet known.
