A motorist accused of fleeing the scene of an accident in East London (EL) that claimed the life of a cyclist has handed himself over to police.
Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Majola Nkohli says the 31-year-old was subsequently arrested and will appear in the local Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.
Almost a month ago, on the 15th of July, EL businessman, 60-year-old Andrew Wienand was cycling on the Amalinda on-ramp just off the N2 when he got struck by a vehicle that fled the scene.
A week later a family friend offered a reward for any information that could lead to the apprehension and successful prosecution of the culprit.
WO Nkohli says the suspect will be charged with culpable homicide with an additional charge of failing to stop at the accident.
He says there is a possibility of additional charges being added to the charge sheet as the investigation unfolds.
Detectives investigating the case also obtained valuable information from an eyewitness on the day of the accident.
Andrew, who matriculated from Selborne College in 1981, was also the former President of the Leander Rowing Club and played a pivotal role as a regatta official for many years.
