A lone Port Elizabeth police official has been lauded for arresting a suspect after witnessing a hijacking on Wednesday in Sidwell.
Constable Wayne Appolis from Algoa Park SAPS was busy investigating a case in the area when he saw a Post Office employee being threatened by two armed men.
Spokesperson Colonel Priscilla Naidu says the 37-year-old employee was busy delivering parcels in Hart Street.
She says a struggle ensued but the suspects still managed to overpower the victim before they got into his Nissan bakkie and drove off.
Colonel Naidu says the Constable immediately set off in pursuit of the suspects with the unmarked police vehicle he was travelling in.
A 2 km chase through the streets eventually ended at the parking lot of Brown Flats in Sidwell.
The police official succeeded in boxing in the vehicle and there was nowhere to escape.
The suspects jumped from the car and ran in different directions moments after driving into the police car.
One suspect ran up the stairs at the flats but was caught by a community member.
The 37-year-old suspect is detained on a charge of vehicle hijacking and reckless or negligent driving.
