A 42-year old man has been arrested in Kwazakele, Port Elizabeth, following a business burglary in Newton Park during the early hours of Monday morning.
Police spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu says it is alleged that business premises were broken into in Pickering Street, where several TV's, speakers, cameras and laptops among other items to the value of more than R260 000 were taken.
She says CCTV footage was viewed and the vehicle used in the break-in was caught on camera.
Naidu says Mount Road detectives, with the assistance of the PE Flying Squad and the Cluster Crime Combating Task Team, swooped on a house in Sakela Street in Kwazakele where the suspect was arrested.
She says although none of the stolen items were found in the house, police confiscated 2000 Mandrax tablets worth R100 000 found hidden in one of the rooms.
The vehicle, a Mazda bakkie was also seized by police.
The suspect will appear in the Port Elizabeth magistrate's court on Friday on charges of housebreaking and dealing in drugs.
Naidu says more arrests are expected.
Newton Park has had several business robberies over the festive season.
Naidu says a spike in crime is normal during the festive season.
She was responding to a query from Algoa FM news about rumours that there is only one police vehicle servicing the cluster of Mount Road, Newton Park and Mill Park.
Naidu says during the festive season, crimes such as armed robberies, robberies, theft and theft from motor vehicles usually increase. She says additional manpower and resources were deployed in the hotspot areas which included Newton Park.
