The 30-year-old man arrested in connection with an attack on a woman at a farm outside Hankey at the weekend has been released due to insufficient evidence.
The suspect was arrested late on Sunday by Hankey Detectives and members of the Provincial Organised Crime Investigation Unit.
Captain Gerda Swart says that after a meeting with the public prosecutor on Tuesday, it was agreed that the man be released as there was not any compelling evidence against him.
She told Algoa FM News that police were still committed to finding the perpetrator and bringing him to book. She said detectives were following up on a number of leads.
The 44-year-old victim was shot and raped during the incident on Friday night before being forced to drive to an ATM in Hankey for the attacker to draw money from her accounts
She managed to drive away while he was withdrawing an undisclosed amount of cash.
