Gqeberha police have arrested a suspect for the brutal attack on an Atlas security officer in Central, while the hunt for his accomplices continues.

Police spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu, said the suspect was arrested on Wednesday night at a flat in Military Road in Central.

She said SAPS Humewood Detectives and Metro Police were following up on information when they arrested a 32-year-old man.

Naidu said he was detained on charges of robbery and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

He is expected to appear in the Gqeberha Magistrate court on Monday.

The suspect and two alleged accomplices were wanted for assaulting and disarming the Atlas security officer who had gone to the assistance of a person being assaulted by a group of men in Western Road.

In an earlier statement, Naidu said that after robbing the security officer on Monday night, the men allegedly went on a violent spree, robbing two students of the laptop computers and cell phones at a flat in Belmont Terrace.

She said the men later went to a dilapidated building on St Patrick Street in Central, where they demanded money owed to them by two people, and where a 29-year-old man was shot in the buttocks.

Naidu said later in Albany Road they fired a random shot which killed an unknown person in the street.

The security officer sustained injuries to the head but was expected to make a full recovery.
