A 37-year-old suspect is in custody after two men hijacked a truck in Sherwood in Gqeberha on Thursday.
Police spokesperson, Captain Andre’ Beetge, said the drama unfolded after 8 am when a truck delivering liquor to an outlet in Kei Street was hijacked by two male suspects.
He said the driver and assistant were forced out of the vehicle and into a mini-bus and driven to the Walmer area where they were left in the bushes near a cemetery.
Beetge said the two alerted Walmer SAPS and the search for the hijacked truck began, which also involved the SAPS airwing.
He said the chopper spotted the truck on the R334 between Motherwell and Kariega and after “circling” it, the truck stopped, and two male suspects jumped out and fled into very dense bushes on the side of the road.
Various SAPS members and Atlas security officials responded to the backup call, and the 37-year- old suspect was soon spotted by the chopper pilot.
“Members of the local neighbourhood watch apprehended the suspect assisted by members of a security company.
“He was formally arrested by SAPS Kariega members, and a jamming device was found in his possession and was confiscated by police,” Beetge said.
The search for the man’s accomplice is continuing.
Nelson Mandela Bay District Commander, Major General Vuyisile Ncata expressed his gratitude towards the good working relationship between SAPS and the external role-players who took part in the truck recovery.
