A suspect has been arrested following the brazen shooting of a policeman in the Motherwell Magistrates Court.
National Police spokesperson, Brigadier Athlenda Mathe, says the Eastern Cape's Anti-Gang Unit apprehended the man who shot and killed a 42-year-old Sergeant on Wednesday morning.
She says the preliminary investigation suggests that the suspect entered the Motherwell Court building at about 09:20, and disarmed the policeman before fatally wounding him and fleeing on foot.
Mathe says members responded immediately and were alerted by a taxi driver that the suspect was in his vehicle with a gun.
She says the suspect was wounded in a shootout with police and taken to a hospital under police guard.
No passengers in the taxi were injured during the crossfire.
Mathe says the name of the Sergeant has not yet been released but he had 16 years of loyal service in the police.
This is the second police Sergeant who was killed in the line of duty in the Province this week.
On Monday, a 41-year-old Sergeant attached to the Public Order Police (POP) unit in East London was killed when he responded to a cash-in-transit robbery in West Bank.
The officer was identified as Lwando Bunga.
