Sunny weather after the big chill

Eastern and Southern Cape residents can look forward to a respite from two days of icy and rainy weather, with the next cold front only expected on Wednesday next week.

The Port Elizabeth branch of the  SA weather service reports that clear skies contributed to freezing conditions in the Eastern Cape interior last night with Buffelsfontein the coldest place in the province at minus 3.9 degrees celsius, followed by Barkley East at minus 2.4. Jamestown fell to minus 0.7 and Queenstown to 0.4 degrees.

Much of the rain that fell in the past 48 hours was concentrated along the coast with Port Elizabeth receiving a total of 35 millimetres and East London 42 millimetres.
A total of only 12 millimetres of rain was measured at George and Plettenberg Bay received 19 millimetres.

There were some good falls in the catchment areas of Nelson Mandela Bay's main storage dams which are now at an average of well over 80 percent of capacity.

Joubertina received 44 millimetres of rain in the past two days and Kareedouw 23 millimetres - but that was only up to 8am yesterday.

Patensie received only 9 millimetres.
