Sudden change of plans for EC learners going back to school

Eastern Cape Transport MEC, Weziwe Tikana-Gxothiwe says it’s all systems go for Scholar Transport provision.

Grades R, 6 and 11 are expected to return to school on Monday, however, early on Monday morning the EC Department of Transport posted on its official Facebook page that there was a "change of plans".

In the post, they requested parents to only send Grade 7 and 12 to school.

According to the post the Department of Education had written to the National Minister of Education, requesting a deviation from the prescribed phasing in of grades, as instructed.

According to the Education MEC Fundile Gade, the province wants to take the same risk-adjusted approach as was done by the National Department.

He said advice received from the Department of Health suggested a detour to their plans, not because they were not ready to deliver the curriculum but rather to balance the lives of teachers and learners.

Basic Education Minister, Angie Motshekga, said on Sunday that 11 teachers and four non-teaching staff in the Eastern Cape had succumbed to Covid19 and since the return of learners in Grade 7 and 12, 44 000 learners were infected.

Thousands of Grade R, 6 and 11 learners across the Province returned to school on Monday.
