A study is to be commissioned on the future of the Apple Express.
Mandela Bay Development Agency CEO Pierre Voges says the study is being funded by the Economic Development, Environment and Tourism Department through the Eastern Cape Development Corporation.
The study will look at the possibilities that exist for the narrow gauge line in terms of tourism, passenger transport and freight.
The Apple Express line is one of several across the country that Transnet Freight Rail is considering concessioning as they do not form part of its core business of transporting freight.
The train is currently not operating, although it is hoped to resume a limited service before the end of the year, thus restoring one of Nelson Mandela Bay's key tourist attractions.
