Twenty students at the Walter Sisulu University in Mthatha are expected to appear in court today on charges of public violence and damage to property.
Police spokesperson, Lieutenant-Colonel Mzukisi Fatyela, says the students were arrested yesterday.
The campus is closed today.
Students were protesting at the Nelson Mandela Drive campus since early yesterday morning.
Fatyela says they blockaded roads with rubbish bins, burnt tyres and threw stones at the police, who fired rubber bullets to disperse them.
Fatyela said students were demanding passes even though they had failed their exams and tests.
A female student fell to her death yesterday while she was watching the protest from the rooftop of a six-storey building.
