Student missing after being swept out to sea on Hobie Beach

An unknown pensioner has emerged as the unsung hero in Thursday morning's drowning drama at Port Elizabeth's Hobie Beach.

The deputy station commander of the national Sea Rescure Institute in Port Elizabeth, Justin Erasmus, says their volunteers were activated shortly before 10am, following a report that three people have ben swept out to sea.

They were part of a group of college students from Lusikisiki who are on an educational camp.

Erasmus says the pensioner noticed that the students were in difficulty, and managed to rescue two of them.

The pensioner went back into the water, but the third student had already disappeared under the water.

A search by police divers was launched but his body had not been found yet.
