Student killed in Durban protest identified by EFF

The Durban University of Technology has been closed until further notice after a student was shot dead on campus.

The 20-year-old student, who is also a member of the EFF, was allegedly shot during a scuffle with a private security guard on campus on Tuesday.

The EFF has since identified the student as Mlungisi Madonsela.

A Spokesperson for EFF's student command Mangaliso Sambo says Madonsela was part of a mass meeting at the University to demand free registration and ultimately free education.

He has called on the University and the Department of Education to hold the security provider to account their member's death.

Police spokesperson Colonel Thembeka Mbele says about 30 students blocked a road on campus pelting people and vehicles with bricks and rocks.

She says an administrative assistant and one security guard were injured during this incident and they called for back-up.

Four students have been arrested and will appear in court soon.
