Striking PE traffic cops fail to help knocked down pedestrian

A Port Elizabeth woman has told how three striking Nelson Mandela Bay traffic officers refused to help a pedestrian who had been knocked down by a car.

The woman, who wants to be known only as Thandi, told the DMB on Algoa FM on Thursday morning that the traffic officers had been in uniform and had been driving official vehicles.

"I told him that there was a pedestrian lying in the middle of the road and that his life was in danger lying in the road in peak hour traffic. So, his response to me was "we are on strike".

"I then caught the attention of a lady also in uniform and I proceeded to tell her the same story and her response was also "we are on strike". So, out of desperation I spoke to a third person who also told me "sorry we are on strike but the best I could maybe do was phone the police."

"You know they were so disinterested and honestly there was no concern or worry for a human being."

"I decided go back to Kempston Road to help the man but when I got there two lovely gentlemen had moved the injured man out of the road and put him on the pavement. So, I told the gentlemen what had happened and they were completely blown away and shocked."

"Not only had they moved the man out of the road but called the emergency services."
