Heavy rain accompanied by strong winds and a hailstorm caused major damage to homes and infrastructure in Mount Ayliff in the Eastern Cape on Wednesday.
According to the Alfred Nzo District Municipality preliminary reports “indicate severe damage to infrastructure which includes schools, electricity, telephone lines and roads.”
The Municipality said disaster and emergency teams have been dispatched to affected communities to assist and assess the damages.
“Disaster teams are expected to work throughout the night assisting communities that are affected,” the District Municipality said in a statement.
“Affected communities are urged to contact their respective ward councillors to report incidences as well as to seek assistance from the disaster teams.”
The municipality said it would be meeting with various stakeholders Thursday morning to provide relief the affected communities.
