Steenkamp family rejects Oscar Pistorius blood money

The High Court in Pretoria heard during day two of pre-sentencing proceedings that Reeva Steenkamp's mother June had rejected a R375 000 payment from her daughter's killer, Oscar Pistorius, as "blood money."

Prosecutor Gerrie Nel told parole officer and social worker Annette Vergeer that June Steenkamp rejects the offer and does not want blood money.

Meanwhile, Dup du Bruyn, the PE-based lawyer for Reeva's parents, told reporters at the court that they were going to repay the R6000 monthly payments Pistorius had been making to them since March of last year, as soon as the mechanics thereof had been worked out.

"When Reeva passed away they were in financial difficulties, I conveyed it to his legal representatives. He tendered to pay R6000 a month to assist them, we wanted to make that public but the request was from their side to keep it confidential and we have honoured that request. The first time it was raised was this morning [Tuesday] and that is what prompted us to make these statements."

Du Bruyn stressed that the Steenkamps would also not be instituting a civil case against Pistorius.

"There will be no civil case, I have been informed by my clients who say that and I've conveyed that to them, Gerrie Nell also conveyed it to the court."
