The Eastern Cape Veterinary Services has now intervened and launched an investigation into the mysterious death of birds in parts of the Province.

Department of Rural Development and Agrarian reform director, Dr Cebisa Mnqeta, says he’s concerned about the high number of birds dying in the Qonce/King William’s Town and East London areas.

He says he has indicated to organizations to give anyone who finds a dead bird his contact number so he can send an officer to collect the carcass for testing.

Residents are still urged to avoid touching any dead birds and if they must, they have been advised to use a mask and surgical gloves.

Dead birds have now been found in Qonce (King Williams Town), East London, Berlin, Stutterheim, Gqeberha and St Francis Bay.

Bird carcasses were sent to labs in both Komani and Pretoria for testing last week and the results are still outstanding as there was also a delay because of the Easter Weekend.
