State Security probes Al Qadea link at Joubertina and Uniondale

State Security Minister David Mbangiseni has told the National Assembly that intensive investigations were conducted into allegations that members of al Qaeda had settled in the Uniondale area of the Southern Cape.

He was replying to a written question from Pieter Groenewald of the Freedom Front Plus who had asked whether the Minister was aware that members of al Qaeda had settled between Joubertina in the Eastern Cape and Uniondale.

The Minister said it was alleged that al Qaeda was involved in providing para-military training to suspected local recruits in the area.

He said intensive investigations had been conducted by the State Security Agency and that the presence of members of al Qaeda or any other terrorist organisations in the areas could not be confirmed.

Mbangiseni said the State Security Agency continued to conduct investigations aimed at identifying and countering any potential security threat to South Africa and was satisfied that the situation was under control.
