The state has called for a sentence of direct imprisonment for 33-year-old KwaZulu Natal accountant, Ravishkar Ramgoolam, who has pleaded guilty to defrauding a popular Port Elizabeth clothing store of more than 8 million rands.
Ramgoolam, who is from Newcastle, pleaded guilty in April to 37 charges of fraud, committed between 2016 and 2017 whilst working as an accountant at BMT Street Fever in PE.
During closing arguments in the Port Elizabeth Commercial Crimes Court on Tuesday, state prosecutor, Lise Keech said Ramgoolam, who blamed the theft on his gambling addiction, was an intelligent young man who deliberately orchestrated the deals.
Defence attorney, Siva Chetty asked the court to consider the fact that Ramgoolam had sought help from the National Responsible Gambling Association.
Ramgoolam remains out on R5000 bail and will be sentenced on the second of September.
