The Public Servants Association (PSA) has called for increased security at the St Albans Correctional Centre in Gqeberha following the stabbing of an official by an inmate on Thursday.
The attack happened while the officials were serving the inmates breakfast near the dining hall area.
PSA spokesperson Madoda Maxakana said the official sustained injuries to his face and hands.
He was rushed to the Livingstone Hospital for medical attention.
Algoa FM reported that the incident on Thursday was the second of its kind in as many weeks.
Two weeks ago, another official was stabbed in the neck and shoulder.
Maxakana said the incident could have been avoided had the Department of Correctional Services (DCS) filled all vacant positions, as continuously demanded by the PSA.
"The PSA urges the Department to urgently fill vacancies to prevent further violence and fatal assaults at Correctional Centres.
"We condemned the incident. It should serve as a costly lesson to the management of the Centre in ensuring that maximum security is restored.
Representatives of the PSA will visit the injured officials to offer moral support and assistance.
Department of Correctional Services spokesperson Singabakho Nxumalo confirmed that an inmate stabbed the official using a sharpened object.
According to Nxumalo, the incident is being investigated.
