Special task team gun down 5 suspected CIT robbers in EC

Eastern Cape Police shot and killed five suspects believed to be involved in Monday's cash-in-transit heist along the N6.

The road between East London and Stutterheim was closed for seven hours after an armoured vehicle (AV) was ambushed near Macleantown.

Several heavily armed suspects in a fleet of stolen vehicles blew up the AV and shot at an SBV escort vehicle, injuring three guards and stealing an undisclosed amount of cash.

A spokesperson for the Hawks, Captain Yolisa Mgolodela, says three of the cars, stolen from different provinces, were abandoned on the scene.

She says their investigation led them to a homestead in Keiskammahoek where the team came under attack- police were forced to retaliate, killing five suspects in the process.

The Hawks found cash in original money bags, eight rifles, 17 magazines and a large number of live ammunition.

Captain Mgolodela says the 58-year-old suspect, who also happened to be the owner of the homestead was arrested and is expected to appear in the King Williams Town Magistrate's court in eQonce soon.

Meanwhile, three other men, aged between 44 and 48, were arrested with cash bags stacked with R100 and R200 notes, four burner phones and a Porsche Cayenne, reported stolen in Gauteng.

The three men will appear in the Cradock Magistrates Court in Nxuba on Thursday.

The Provincial Head Major General Mboiki Obed Ngwenya expressed his delight and lauded the swift joint effort by the Interim Cash-In-Transit (CIT) task team of the Hawks with the provincial Tactical Response Team (TRT) in locating the CIT suspects within a few hours of the incident on 29 July 2024.
