Spate of armed robberies hit Port Elizabeth

Robbers have made off with cigarettes and medicines worth nearly R500 000 in two separate armed robberies in Port Elizabeth.

Police spokesperson, Captain Stanley Jarvis, says employees of a tobacco firm were off-loading cigarettes at a spaza shop in Bethelsdorp on Wednesday morning when they were approached by two men.

He says the employees were forced into their vehicle and driven to Bloemendal, where four other suspects were waiting.

Jarvis says they made off with cigarettes worth R91 000.

In another business robbery on Tuesday night, employees of a freight company were accosted by four gunmen while packing medicine destined for East London.

Jarvis says the gunmen locked the employees in the back of the truck before they were driven to Bluewater Bay where the truck was abandoned.

The employees managed to open the truck's doors from the inside and raise the alarm, but by then the robbers had made off with the medicine valued at R400 000

No arrests have yet been made.
