A Southern Elephant Seal that came ashore in the Bonza Bay area in East London on Wednesday appears to be in good health.
The East London Aquarium and Museum staff have assessed him and it is suspected that he may have come out to moult.
Moulting is a process of shedding or casting off an outer layer of skin to form a replacement and is common throughout the animal kingdom.
According to FELA (Friends of the East London Aquarium), the young bull weighs about 1800kg and is about 4 meters long and in good health.
Residents are requested to stay at least 35 meters away from the animal to allow it to complete its moult.
Dog owners are also requested to keep their animals on a leash.
Elephant seals are a protected species under the Seabird and Seals Act of 1973.
