Police in Gqeberha have arrested the son of the 65-year-old woman who died in a fire in a flat in Park Drive, detaining him on a charge of murder.
The 33-year-old man was taken into custody at a Centre in Walmer around noon on Wednesday by police and private security following the death of his mother, Sharon Ann Butlion.
Police initially opened an inquest docket following the blaze at her Fernkloof flat early on Tuesday morning, but later changed it to a murder case after the initial investigation revealed foul play.
The exact cause of her death has not yet been released.
Butlion’s vehicle, a Ford Fiesta, was found on Tuesday afternoon abandoned on Victoria Drive and the search for her son began.
Police spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu, said he is expected to appear in court soon.
