The 33-year-old Gqeberha man who was arrested a day after his 65-year-old mother died in a fire in Park Drive on Tuesday, made his first court appearance on Friday.
Maurice Butlion indicated in court that he would not apply for bail and intends to plead guilty.
Firefighters in Gqeberha were called out to the Fernkloof flats on Tuesday following reports of a fire.
Police spokesperson Colonel Priscilla Naidu said police found the body of Sharon Ann Butlion and initially opened an inquest docket, however, officers on the scene soon discovered signs of foul play.
Butlion was arrested at an establishment in Walmer on Wednesday a day after his mother's vehicle was found abandoned along Victoria Drive.
Information on the cause of Butlion's death has not yet been released to the public.
