Son accused of mom's murder sent for psychiatric evaluation

A Gqeberha man who has been charged in connection with the murder of his mother has finally been admitted to undergo psychiatric evaluation.

Maurice Butlion, 33, made a brief appearance in the Gqeberha Magistrates Court on Wednesday.

He faces a charge of murder and arson relating to the death of his 65-year-old mother, Sharon-Ann, in a suspicious fire that engulfed her flat in Park Drive in September 2022.

He was arrested at an establishment in Walmer a day after his mother's vehicle was found abandoned along Victoria Drive.

The court was informed that Butlion would be taken to Fort England Psychiatric Hospital in Makhanda on Wednesday, where he will spend the next 30 days.

During his very first court appearance, Butlion communicated to the court that he intended to plead guilty, but during his second appearance, it seemed like he made an about-turn.
