Son accused of mom’s murder back in court

Maurice Butlion

File

The Gqeberha man who has been charged in connection with the murder of his mother made a brief appearance in the Magistrate’s Court on Friday.

Maurice Butlion, 33, was arrested for the murder of his 65-year-old mother, Sharon-Ann, who died in a suspicious fire that engulfed her Park Drive flat in September last year.

He was arrested at an establishment in Walmer a day after his mother's vehicle was found abandoned along Victoria Drive.

During his first court appearance he communicated to the court that he intended to plead guilty, but during his second appearance, it seemed like he made an about-turn.

Butlion is set to undergo psychiatric observation at the Fort England Hospital in Makhanda, but a bed will only be available in July next year.

State Prosecutor Melani Hammett asked the court if Fort England could be approached to possibly try and get an earlier date.
