Solidarity granted court order against Continental Tyre

The trade union Solidarity has been granted a court order in a bid to stop the retrenchment of more than a hundred people at Continental Tyre in Port Elizabeth.

Judgement was handed down in the PE labour court on Thursday after the union served the company with an urgent interdict.

Solidarity's Deputy Secretary General, Johan Kruger, says the retrenchment process was based on an agreement between the company and trade union Numsa, which brought an end to an earlier strike at the PE tyre maker.

In terms of the agreement, the company would scrap one shift to meet the financial obligations attached to the Numsa demands and in the process 125 people would lose their jobs.

Kruger says initial notices given to the employees will now be withdrawn.

"The whole process must now start a fresh, and this is really good news." he said
