Slight drop in fuel prices predicted for December

Petrol prices are set to decrease yet again in December, according to mid-month data made available by the Central Energy Fund on Monday.

A decrease of around 35 cents per litre for petrol and five cents per litre for diesel will come as welcome news to South African motorists, who were treated to decreases in both October and November.

The Central Energy Fund's mid-month report suggests that the drop on fuel prices is to due to the strengthening of the rand/dollar exchange rate, and changes to international petroleum product costs.

The Automobile Association says that the currency and oil price fluctuations were attributable to world consumption rebounding faster than production, and what it called the 'background noise' around the US election of Joe Biden as President.

It also says that optimism in the wake of the announcement of a COVID-19 vaccine was being countered by jitters over renewed lockdowns in Europe and the rapid spread of the virus in the USA.
