Sixteen arrests for N2 protest outside Butterworth

Butterworth police have arrested sixteen people after several vehicles were pelted with stones on the N2 outside the town during a protest on Monday.

Angry residents took to the streets this morning demanding an end to water outages.

Mnquma Municipality spokesperson, Loyiso Mpalantshane says that water provision was disrupted after disgruntled workers at Amathole Water allegedly vandalised water facilities following failed negotiations with the employer.

Police spokesperson, Captain Jackson Manatha says criminal elements have hijacked the protest.

He says ten men and six women will be charged with malicious damage to property.

The N2 is currently being monitored by SAPS.
