Dutywa police have opened an inquest docket after a six-year-old girl drowned in a dam in the area, Eastern Cape police said on Saturday.
It was alleged that the girl had been sent to fetch water from the dam at Mbewuleni village, Dutywa at about 3.20pm on Friday, Captain Jackson Manatha said.
“She drowned while she was fetching the water. It is not clear at this point in time what led to the drowning of the young girl,” he said.
Mthatha police divers had retrieved her body. Her identity was being withheld until all her family members were informed of her death. Police appealed to parents not to send young children alone to dams, rivers, and forests, “as this is always dangerous”, Manatha said.
