Six people were killed and seven others were injured in two separate accidents in the Eastern Cape late on Friday.

The provincial Transport Department says in the first accident, four people were killed and four sustained injuries in a head-on collision on the N2 between Peddie and Makhanda.

Spokesperson, Unathi Binqose says a Toyota Avanza with seven occupants collided with a Fidelity security vehicle with two male officers.

He says four people, including the driver of the Avanza, died at the scene while five others, including both occupants of the security vehicle, were rushed to a hospital in Makhanda.

Binqose says in another head-on collision on the R61 between Mthatha and Engcobo, two people were killed and three others were injured when a VW Polo collided with a mini truck.

He says the driver of the Polo and a passenger in the rear died at the scene, while the truck driver escaped unharmed.

Police are investigating cases of culpable homicide.
