Six people die in two horror EC accidents

Three people were killed when a taxi travelling from Hankey to Port Elizabeth crashed on the N2 near the Van Stadens turn-off.

Provincial traffic spokesperson, Charles Bramwell, said it's suspected that taxi, with 16 passengers, suffered a tyre-burst, causing it to overturn and go down an embankment.

"In total 13 passengers were treated for injuries on the scene.  One was serious, six sustained moderate injuries while six other passengers suffered minor injuries," Bramwell said.

He said all the injured passengers were transported to the Livingstone Hospital in Port Elizabeth.

"Unfortunately, we three fatalities.  One male victim was trapped in the front seat, while a female passenger was trapped inside the vehicle in the rear seat.  We had one female passenger who was trapped underneath the taxi," he said.

This was the second fatal accident on Eastern Cape roads on Saturday.

Three people were killed and three more seriously injured when a mini-bus travelling from the Western Cape, crashed on the R61 in the Eastern Cape at about 4 am.

Bramwell, said the crash occurred about 60 kilometres from Aberdeen at around four this morning.

He said it is alleged that a tyre burst caused the minibus to overturn, leading to some passengers being ejected from the vehicle.

Bramwell said a bus travelling in the opposite direction apparently drove over some of the passengers lying in the road.

Two passengers died on the scene while the third victim died later in hospital.

The case is under investigation by Aberdeen police.
