Port Elizabeth police have arrested four suspects and confiscated a 9mm pistol as well a Ford Ranger 4x4 following an attempted hijacking in Central.
The drama had had a sequel on Nelson Mandela University's south campus, where students are protesting the rape and stabbing of two female students earlier this week.
Police spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu, says the drama began when the suspects were allegedly involved in an attempted hijacking in Central.
She said thereafter the vehicle drove onto Nelson Mandela University's south campus.
"They forced their way through the security guards and just before they got to the boom gate they made a U-turn. As they made the U-turn shots were fired at an ENCA journalist covering the protest action at the University. Nobody was injured in the incident," Naidu said.
"The vehicle was immediately circulated and the PE K9 unit, as well as Humewood Detectives and Humewood Crime Prevention Unit members as well as Metro Police, cornered the vehicle on the M4 freeway near Walmer Boulevard. The suspects will be detained on charges of attempted murder, attempted hijacking as well as discharging of a firearm," said Naidu.
"We wish to emphasise that this had nothing to do with the student protest at the University. It was an isolated incident," she said.
