Police in Gqeberha are searching for a group of armed men who robbed security guards who were parked at one of the entrances at the mall in Ring Road in Greenacres on Wednesday.
Spokesperson Colonel Priscilla Naidu says the guards were dropping off money shortly after 10 am and as one guard entered the mall, he was hastily approached by 4-6 armed men who grabbed two boxes of money and fled.
She says when one of the guards chased after the vehicle, a Nissan NP 200 bakkie, several shots were fired at him.
Colonel Naidu says the driver managed to ram his car into the getaway vehicle, but they managed to speed away.
She says it is alleged that the suspects abandoned the bakkie in Kipling Street when the suspects allegedly hijacked another vehicle and sped off.
A CIT robbery is under investigation by the Hawks.
Nobody was injured.
Meanwhile, although the crime happened on Ring Road, outside the Mall, the Shopping Centre assured patrons that their safety remains a top priority.
Marketing Manager Zane Lagerdien said they cooperate fully with law enforcement and extended their gratitude to SAPS and their security team and armed response for their immediate assistance.
