Shooting spree - PE gang affiliate gets 24 years behind bars

A 21-year-old Port Elizabeth gang member has been sentenced to an effective 24 years imprisonment for murder, attempted murder and the unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition.

Police spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu says Jermaine Ruiters was sentenced in the PE Regional Court on Monday following a shooting spree which took place over two weeks in May, 2016.

In the first incident, Ruiters and an accomplice shot and killed 29-year-old Charlton Matthews and wounded another victim after storming into a house in Deverill Street in Helenvale.

Ten days later, Ruiters and another man opened fire on three men in Pienaar Street in Helenvale. No-one was injured in that incident.

Colonel Naidu says that three days after that, on the 20th of May 2016, police received information about a shooting in Calvin Street in Helenvale.

The investigating officer proceeded to hospital and found their suspect Ruiters, who was 18 at the time, with two gunshot wounds and placed him under arrest.

He remained in custody until the finalisation of the case.
